Hoe manipuleert de mens de tijd? Hoe manipuleren mensen elkaar? Wat is essentieel aan de mens ten opzichte van zichzelf, anderen, zijn omgeving en de dynamische objecten die hij creëert of ontdekt? Wat is de limiet van onze menselijke relaties?

Een asymptoot verwijst in de wiskunde naar een lijn tot waartoe een kromme steeds dichter nadert, zonder die ooit te raken. De paradox van het oneindige net-niet-samenvallen, en de poëzie die de vertraging kan opleveren, staan centraal in Asymptote. In een maatschappij die steeds sneller voortraast, ontstaan in Asymptote twee menselijke figuren die zich een landschap toe-eigenen en thuiskomen. Of net niet.

In duisternis en ontdaan van tijd en ruimte ontvouwt zich een landschap waarin kwetsbare lichamen tijd, elkaar en hun omgeving manipuleren. Asymptote onderzoekt de onderlinge invloed tussen een landschap en zijn bewoners, en de virtuele en reële identiteit die voortkomt uit bezette ruimte. Groei, bloei en verval vervagen op menselijke schaal in elkaar.

Kevin Trappeniers ontwikkelt een verstilde, beeldende theatertaal in secuur, zintuiglijk werk, op de snijlijn tussen beeldende kunst, theater en dans. Hij creëert woordeloze voorstellingen waarbij aan spel, licht, geluid, lichaam en scenografie precies even veel gewicht gegeven wordt.

Asymptote groeide uit een onderzoeksresidentie in Kunstenwerkplaats L’L in 2011 en is nu klaar voor een eerste tournee in Vlaanderen, Nederland en Frankrijk. In asymptote werkt Kevin Trappeniers samen met performer Manon Avermaete, componist Kreng (Pepijn Caudron) en lichtkunstenares Laurence Halloy.

In 2014 werkte Trappeniers in TAKT (Dommelhof) aan de dansvoorstelling Selfed voor Plesni Teater Ljubljana (SI). Dit choreografiedebuut werd het volgende jaar met een Belgische ploeg herwerkt tot fysiek theater: Drag Chain/Push Chain. Daarvoor creëerde al hij eigen werk op de scheidingslijn tussen theater en installatie: Schadenfreude, Sic Transit Gloria Mundi, Darkdroom… Parallel hieraan werkt Trappeniers als performer: o.a. in de performances/installaties van de Saturn-reeks van Karl Van Welden (United Planets), de serie Monster! van Abattoir Fermé en Who Makes Paintings Anyway?

How does man manipulates time? How do people manipulate each other? What is essential to man with respect to himself, to others, in his dealings with his surroundings and towards the dynamic objects he creates or discovers? What is the limit of our human relationships?

An asymptote refers in mathematics to a line to which a curve approaches ever closer, without ever touching.The paradox of the infinite never quite falling together, and the poetry caused by slow-moving, are key in Asymptote. In a society that is ever more rapidly progressing, two human figures arise in Asymptote who appropriate a landscape and come home. Or not quite.

For Asymptote, Kevin Trappeniers works together with performer Manon Avermaete, composer Kreng (Pepijn Caudron) and light artist Laurence Halloy. After a research phase in L’L, asymptote is ready for a first tour in Flanders, the Netherlands and France.

In darkness and stripped from time and space, a landscape unfolds in which vulnerable bodies manipulate time, each other and their environment. Asymptote researches the mutual infl uence between a landscape and its inhabitants, and the virtual and real identity that stems from occupied space. Growth, bloom and collapse fade into each other on a human scale.

Kevin Trappeniers develops a stilled, visual and physical theatrical language in detailed, sensate work at the intersection of theatre, dance and visual arts. He mostly creates wordless performances in which acting, lighting, sound, body and scenography are equally important.
