YouYou Group
YOUYOUYOU is een vocale performance gebaseerd op een hoog vibrato waarmee vrouwen ululeren om uiting te geven aan vreugde of andere emoties. Het eeuwenoude gebruik is te vinden in Afrika, het Midden-Oosten en rond de Middellandse Zee onder verschillende namen zoals zaghareed (arabisch), kel (fars)i, zilgit (Koerdisch), enz. Door globalisering en diaspora zijn deze luide kreet en zijn vele varianten over de hele wereld gemigreerd.
In YOUYOUYOU laten de performers dit vibrato acht eindeloze minuten door de lucht klinken. Door een complex systeem van overlappingen, interacties en relais wordt het stuk een sonische marathon of een zweepslag van geluid, die de ruimte en de mensen die erin wonen betovert.
YOUYOUYOU is het signatuurstuk van de YouYou Group uit 2014 dat in steeds wisselende versies en perioden werd opgevoerd met Brusselse of lokale performers, zoals in Grenoble, Berlijn, Baskenland enz. De groep onderhoudt met dit werk een levend repertoire en beoefent er collectieve uitwisseling mee. In Antwerpen regisseren Caroline Daish en Hoda Siahtiri een versie met een speciaal samengestelde groep locals.

EN – YOUYOUYOU is a vocal performance based on a high vibrato with which women ululate to express joy or other emotions. The ancient custom can be found in Africa, the Middle East and around the Mediterranean under different names like zaghareed (arabic), kel (fars)i, zilgit (Kurdish), etc. Due to globalisation and diaspora, this loud cry and its many variants have migrated all over the world.
In YOUYOUYOU the performers keep this vibrato for eight endless minutes in the air. Through an intricate system of overlaps, interactions and relays, the piece becomes a sonic marathon or a whiplash of sound, which enchants the space and the people who inhabit it.
YOUYOUYOU is the YouYou Group’s signature piece from 2014 which has been remade in always changing versions and durations with Brussels or local performers, like in Grenoble, Berlin and the Basque Country etc. The group maintains with this work a living repertoire and practices collective exchange through it. In Antwerp Caroline Daish and Hoda Siahtiri are directing a version with a specially composed group of locals.
Over de Makers
Caroline Daish (°1967) is een Brusselse kunstenaar met roots in Australië. Caroline maakt deel uit van de Brusselse YouYou-groep van bij de oprichting in 2014. Ze heeft werkervaring in theater, circus, poppenspel en community theater in Australië. In België werkt ze met stem-, film- en geluidscreaties. Caroline ontwikkelt haar eigen werk naast samenwerkingen met andere kunstenaars en hun creaties.
Hoda Siahtiri is een Brusselse kunstenaar met een professionele en educatieve achtergrond in cinema en performatieve kunsten. Hoda’s werk gaat over ontheemding, verdriet en vocaal voorouderlijk erfgoed. Ze doet een doctoraatsonderzoek aan Sint-Lucas Antwerpen over de zangtraditie van Bakhtiari vrouwen in het westen van Iran. Haar kortfilms, tentoonstellingen en performances zijn internationaal vertoond op verschillende podia en festivals. Hoda is lid van de Youyou Group sinds 2020.
EN – Caroline Daish (b. 1967) is a Brussels-based artist with roots in Australia. Caroline has been part of the Brussels YouYou group since its creation in 2014. She has working experience in theater, circus, puppetry and community theater in Australia. In Belgium, she works with voice, film and sound pieces. Caroline develops her own work alongside collaborations with other artists and their creations.
Hoda Siahtiri is a Brussels based artist with professional and educational back ground in cinema and performative arts. Hoda’s work centres on displacement, grief and vocal ancestral heritage. She conducts a PhD research at Sint-Lucas Antwerp on the singing tradition of Bakhtiari women in the west of Iran. Her short films, exhibitions and performances have been internationally shown in different venues and festivals. Hoda is a member of the Youyou Group since 2020.
