In Yes, een doorlopende installatie-voorstelling, brengen Carly Wijs en Marijke van Warmerdam een bewerking van James Joyce ’s Exiles in een combinatie van theater, tekst, video, geluid en installatie.

Sinds 20 jaar is Wijs gefascineerd door het werk van Joyce; zijn A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man speelde zelfs een rol in haar ontwikkeling als beginnend kunstenaar. Yes was Joyce’s favoriete woord en staat gelijk aan de onderdompeling in zijn universum, door beeld, het spel en de geluidinstallatie aan de ingang van ruimte.

Centraal staat de intrige tussen een echtpaar en hun minnaar en maîtresse. Yes is een reflectie op de moderne mens en een eigentijdse invulling van relaties: hoofdpersonage Richard stimuleert zijn vrouw tot een open relatie en dwingt haar zelfs tot het nemen van een minnaar, echter vooral opdat hijzelf zijn gang zou kunnen gaan. Richard is, zoals Joyce zelf, een schrijver die een groot deel van zijn leven in ballingschap doorbracht en met een jongere vrouw beneden zijn stand huwde.

Begeleid door de film Monologue Intérieur van de Nederlandse kunstenares Marijke van Warmerdam spelen de drie acteurs Carly Wijs, Jerry Killick en Rasmus Ölme in een constante herhaling. Het verhaal heeft geen heldere plot maar kan alle kanten uitgaan, overeenkomstig James Joyce’s stream of consciousness of de grilligheid van het menselijke denken. Onderworpen aan de dwang van het spelen, zijn de drie personages letterlijk gevangen in een museumruimte, waar hun theatrale loop begint als het museum de deuren opent en ophoudt als het museum sluit. Zowel het spel, de videofilm als het geluidwerk, zijn onafgebroken te zien.

Carly Wijs (°1966) studeerde in 1990 af aan de Toneel Academie Maastricht. Vanaf 1992 speelde ze in Het liegen in ontbinding van Guy Cassiers, en werkte voor verschillende Belgische gezelschappen: NTGent, De Onderneming, de Roovers, Jan Lauwers & Needcompany, Josse de Pauw, tg STAN en Ultima Vez. In 2004 richtte Carly de structuur Exiles op om haar eigen werk te produceren. Ze creëerde onder meer Wat is denken? (2004), Niemand kan het (2008), en F=ma (2010). Carly speelde tevens in verscheidene Nederlandse films en tv-series en werkt als docent theater aan het Rits en P.A.R.T.S.

In Yes, a continual installation production, Carly Wijs and Marijke van Warmerdam present an adaptation of the oeuvre and the text Exiles by James Joyce in a combination of theatre, text, video, audio and installation. The three main characters are caught up in a three-way relationship from which they constantly attempt to free themselves in a loop. In Yes, Carly Wijs performs beside actors Jerry Killick and Rasmus Ölme.

The central element of the three character’s behaviour in the ten scenes is the intrigue between a married couple and their lovers. The play is a reflection on humanity in the modern age and a contemporary interpretation of relationships: the main character, Richard, encourages his wife to have an open relationship and goes so far as to compel her to take a lover, but his primary motivation is remorselessly to go his own way. Richard is also a writer, like Joyce himself, and spent much of his life in exile, married to a younger woman from a lower social class.

James Joyce made use of so-called ‘stream of consciousness’ in his works, an imitation of human thought processes in an uninterrupted stream of ideas, feelings, observations and memories. The narrative has no clear plot, but may go in any direction, according to the caprice of the character’s thoughts. This constant stream led to the choice of a museum as the performance space for Yes, where – in contrast to a theatre – the text is continuously repeated in different and varying ways, from the moment the museum opens until closing time.
