Het Griekse gezelschap ENTROPIA kaart met theater, multimediale en interdisciplinaire voorstellingen brandend actuele thema’s aan, vaak in een internationale setting. Dat is met P.I.G.S. niet anders.

EU-analisten, investeerders en financiële verslaggevers spreken graag over ‘de PIGS’ wanneer ze het hebben over de zwakkere landen van de Eurozone (Portugal, Ierland, Griekenland en Spanje). Dit gekleurde letterwoord roept in deze crisisperiode negatieve, nationale stereotypen op. ENTROPIA ziet hier een gevaarlijk sociologisch proces aan het werk: het dehumaniseren van de ander via verbaal geweld. Alle inwoners van een land worden collectief gestigmatiseerd.

Met P.I.G.S. stelt ENTROPIA op een speelse en humoristische manier vragen bij onze Europese beschaving. De groep belicht de huidige financiële, politieke en sociale crisis, onderzoekt de stereotypen uit het verleden en reflecteert over de toekomst.

In oktober gaat P.I.G.S. in première in Athene. Vanaf 16 september komen de Grieken op residentie in de MontyFaktorij en werken ze hun voorstelling af. Op het einde van hun verblijf testen ze P.I.G.S. alvast op een Belgisch publiek.

The acronym Ρ.Ι.G.S. (Portugal – Ireland – Greece – Spain), which has been currently being used by bond analysts, investors’ circles and financial commentators as a concise manner of reference to the economically weaker countries of the Eurozone, consists a contemporary version of the historic, sociological phenomenon of the invocation of negative national stereotypes in crucial periods, in its most dangerous expression: the dispute of the human nature of fellow human beings through the verbal violence of “dehumanization”. According to this, instead of criticizing and condemning specific decisions or actions, a whole territory and its people are being collectively stigmatized and any individual belonging to this national group is treated as a representative of this stereotype.

Using the term as pretext, we will attempt to raise reasonable questions about the maturity of Europe’s political civilization and address them in a playful and humorous manner, to investigate the current financial, political and social crisis, to debate the stereotypes of the past and to reflect on our vision for the future.
